Servant Leadership

In January 2024, I was left as the sole member of A Moment of Magic. The former president had intentionally torn down the organization to replace it with a for-profit party company, and I was the only one who chose to stay.

As the new president, at first my primary goal was to be the perfect leader. With every mistake, I would berate myself as incompetent. Now, I realize that those mistakes were the most important development in my leadership skillset. The endeavor of perfection as a leader is the very enemy of success in leadership. When my ego would not allow me to make mistakes, it would also prohibit me from seeing my own errors, trusting others with tasks, and seeking collaboration.

As I learned to appreciate my mistakes as a part of a learning process, I also learned to lay down the pursuit of perfection and seek instead growth through the collaboration of each individual member of A Moment of Magic. I finally understood the value of leading with humility, and our organization has continued to benefit from this style of leadership.

Every member of our eboard now follows this pattern of leadership. We work together, not to further our own aims, but to create a thriving organization that will continue to impact the lives of children for many years. As a pre-medical student, I know that humility and collaboration are two major keys to a successful career in medicine. Being able to collaborate with other medical professionals as well as to truly listen to my patients will be key to operating as a leader in this field, as well as providing optimal care for my patients.
